The Genzler Amplification Bass Array BA12-3 (often simply referred to as the BA12) is a highly innovative, premium bass speaker cabinet that fundamentally rethinks how bass frequencies and high-end detail interact on stage.
Instead of using a traditional woofer-and-tweeter setup, founder Jeff Genzler combined standard bass cabinet design with pro-audio line array technology.
The Design Concept: Why It’s Unique
Traditional large bass speakers tend to "beam" their midrange and high frequencies in a narrow cone, meaning it sounds great if you are standing directly in front of the cabinet, but muddy or "wonky" if you step to the side.
Genzler solves this by placing a vertical column of four 3-inch neodymium drivers directly in front of a heavy-duty 12-inch neodymium woofer.
- Single Point Source: Because the line array sits directly in front of the woofer on the same linear plane, the sound projects as a single point source (similar to a concentric speaker).
- Massive Dispersion: The line array principles give the crucial midrange and high frequencies a incredibly wide horizontal dispersion and a tightly controlled vertical pattern. No matter where you stand on stage or in the audience, you hear the exact same articulate tone.
- No More Harsh Tweeters: Because 3-inch cone transducers handle the upper frequencies down to the 800 Hz crossover point, you get a seamless, incredibly musical midrange transition without the harsh, clicky artifacts of a standard compression horn/tweeter.
Core Specifications
Genzler produces these in both a Straight (STR) and a Slant (SLT) front baffle configuration (the slant version angles up 6 degrees to project directly at your ears on tight stages). A Series 2 update is also available, featuring upgraded custom Italian drivers and slightly lighter cabinet weights.
- Speaker Configuration: 1 x 12" Neodymium Woofer & 4 x 3" Neodymium Mid/High Drivers
- Power Handling: 350 Watts (Original) / 400 Watts (Series 2)
- Impedance: 8 Ohms
- Frequency Response: ~32Hz – 15kHz (Series 2 specs extend up to 18kHz)
- Crossover Frequency: 800 Hz (utilizing a custom 6 dB/octave network)
- Weight: Super portable, ranging from 31 lbs to 35 lbs depending on the specific model and series.
- Cabinet Construction: Built with premium, lightweight Lite-ply and Baltic birch plywood, finished in heavy-duty textured black vinyl.
- Inputs: Dual Speakon and 1/4" combination input jacks.
Sonic Profile
- Lows: Exceptional support for the low-B fundamental on 5-string basses. The dual triangular front ports ensure the low end feels full and deep, but remains incredibly tight and fast rather than boomy.
- Mids: Warm, open, and hyper-articulate. If you play fingerstyle, slap, or chordal work, every nuance is preserved perfectly.
- Highs: Smooth and present, capturing the woodiness of an acoustic upright or the crisp attack of a fresh set of roundwounds without sounding brittle.
They pair beautifully with Genzler’s own Magellan series heads (like the MG350 or MG800), and stacking a straight BA12-3 with a slanted BA12-3 on top is widely considered a "holy grail" micro-rig among gigging bassists.
