The NUX Optima Air (part of their Verdugo series) is a dual-switch acoustic preamp and Impulse Response (IR) loader pedal. It is primarily designed to fix the thin, artificial "piezo quack" common in acoustic-electric guitar pickups by replacing it with the full, rich profile of a studio-mic'd acoustic guitar.

It is highly versatile because it combines a physical-modeling preamp, an IR loader, and a unique DIY capture function into one compact, stage-ready unit.

Core Features & Architecture

The pedal features a dual-footswitch layout that allows you to toggle or combine two completely independent sections:

1. The Acoustic Simulator & IR Loader (Left Side)

This section processes your guitar's direct signal through an Impulse Response file to mimic the resonance of high-end acoustic bodies.

  • 15 Built-In Profiles: It comes pre-loaded with studio profiles of iconic acoustics (like the Gibson J-45, Hummingbird, and Taylor 314). These profiles are optimized specifically depending on whether you are plugging in an acoustic with a piezo or magnetic pickup, or even a solid-body electric guitar.
  • IR Level Control: A dedicated blend knob lets you mix the dry pickup signal with the wet IR simulation to find the sweet spot between cutting through a live mix and sounding natural.
  • Third-Party IRs: It includes 9 empty preset slots where you can load your own favorite third-party acoustic IRs via computer software.

2. The Preamp Section (Right Side)

The right side toggles a fully functional preamp driven by NUX's White Box physical modeling algorithm.

  • Circuit Inspiration: The preamp emulates the behavior and harmonic coloration of the legendary Neve 1073 British console preamp.
  • Tone Shaping: It provides tactile analog-style controls for Gain, Bass, Middle, and Treble. Because it models analog circuitry, tweaking one knob slightly interacts with the others, giving it a very natural, musical response.
  • Ambient Reverb: A simple, one-knob studio reverb adjusts both the decay and mix simultaneously to quickly dial in some spatial depth.

The IR Capture Function

One of the most powerful features of the Optima Air is its Profile Capture capability. If you have a favorite acoustic guitar and a decent condenser microphone at home, you can create your own custom IR files without needing external software:

  1. You route a microphone through a separate mic preamp into the Optima Air's Return jack.
  2. Plug your acoustic's pickup into the main Input.
  3. Engage the pedal's capture mode, and it will guide you through a brief counting phase where you play clean chords and fingerpicking.
  4. The pedal compares the raw pickup signal to the microphone signal, calculates the frequency delta, and saves a custom IR that makes your live pickup sound exactly like your guitar mic'd up in the studio.

Technical Specifications & Connectivity

The rear and side panels are packed with robust I/O configurations, making it just as useful as a standalone fly-rig DI box as it is a recording interface.

Feature / Connection

Specification / Function

Audio Quality

24-bit, 48-kHz sampling quality

Main I/O

1/4-inch Mono Input and Output

Effects Loop

1/4-inch Send/Return (perfect for placing delay/modulation after the preamp or routing mic signals during capture)

Direct Out

Balanced XLR DI Out with a ground lift for sending a clean signal straight to a front-of-house PA mixer

Practice Tools

1/8-inch (3.5mm) Auxiliary Input for backing tracks & 1/8-inch Headphone Jack for silent practicing
