The Red Witch Ivy Distortion is a high-gain, silicon-based analog distortion pedal from Red Witch’s innovative, discontinued Seven Sisters lineup. Designed in New Zealand, this series was famous for introducing the world’s first rechargeable, lithium-ion-powered stomp boxes.
The Ivy is engineered specifically for guitarists chasing aggressive, saturated, old-school wall-of-sound distortion reminiscent of early Metallica and Slayer recordings.
Key Features & Sonic Character
- Gargantuan Metal Tones: The Ivy is a high-gain priestess. It specializes in heavy, unrefined, and raw silicon distortion. Pushed into a clean channel, it provides a fierce, mid-focused punch with a slight cut in the deep bass and piercing treble to ensure your rhythm chugs stay tightly defined and musical.
- Streamlined Two-Knob Layout: To keep the footprint as tiny and distraction-free as possible, the pedal features just two controls:
- Volume: Controls the overall output level. There is plenty of headroom available to push an already cooking tube amp over the edge.
- Gain: Sweeps from a gritty, aggressive rock crunch to a fully saturated, glassy lead sustain.
- True Bypass Switching: Employs a mechanical true bypass switch to ensure your core guitar signal remains completely unaltered when the pedal is disengaged.
The Seven Sisters Hardware Design
What truly sets the Ivy Distortion apart from standard micro-pedals is its physical and electrical engineering:
- Internal Lithium-Ion Battery: Hidden inside the enclosure is a rechargeable cell (similar to smartphone technology). After a 4-hour charge using a standard 9V DC guitar power supply, the Ivy delivers up to 220 hours of continuous, standalone playtime. This frees you from the clutter of power cables and completely eliminates the dirty ground-loop hum or line noise common in venue power outlets.
- Ultra-Compact Footprint: Measuring just 90mm x 30mm x 45mm and weighing a meager 157 grams, it is exceptionally small.
- Top-Mounted Jacks: To maximize pedalboard real estate, Red Witch placed the input and output jacks on the very top edge of the pedal rather than the sides. If you run multiple pedals from this series, you can butt them directly against one another, allowing you to fit a massive amount of tonal options into a tiny space.
Why Grab This Used Unit?
Because the Seven Sisters series is no longer in standard production, finding a well-maintained used Ivy Distortion is an excellent opportunity for both collectors and gigging musicians. Its microscopic size makes it a perfect emergency high-gain option to throw into a gig bag or squeeze onto a crowded board.
If you are currently looking at a used unit in a shop inventory system, it's always recommended to ensure it has been bench-tested by a technician to verify the internal charging circuitry and battery retention are holding up perfectly for plug-and-play reliability!
